FAQS

ARE HUMANIST WEDDING CEREMONIES LEGAL IN NORTHERN IRELAND?

Yes, Humanist Wedding Ceremonies are legally recognised in Northern Ireland and can take place pretty much anywhere, provided the space is deemed non-religious and safe. (I will guide you through all of the legalities and form filling as we go).

WHAT'S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A HUMANIST WEDDING AND A REGISTRAR?

Although both are legally recognised there are numerous differences, namely that Humanist Weddings are completely bespoke and unique, there’s no set script, structure or limitations on location. Whereas registrar weddings are quite limited in freedom, scope and time duration, often following a set, generic delivery that isn’t necessarily representative of you as a couple.

What works for one couple, may not work for another and therefore it is a completely personal choice, there’s no right or wrong way.

DO WE NEED TO IDENTIFY AS 'HUMANISTS' TO HAVE A HUMANIST WEDDING?

No. As inclusivity is at the heart of Humanism, you don’t need to identify as a Humanist to have a Humanist Wedding. We are all unique and so there are many reasons why a Humanist Wedding may be the best fit for you, such as not being affiliated to any religion or world view, or being an interfaith couple with different views and religious affiliations, and therefore a neutral setting such as a Humanist Wedding would be much more fitting.

DO YOU CONDUCT SAME-SEX HUMANIST WEDDINGS?

Yes, absolutely! Humanists UK have conducted same-sex weddings for decades (in England, Scotland and Wales), and since 2020 in Northern Ireland when it became legally recognised.

IS THERE A SET TIMELINE FOR FINDING A CELEBRANT?

I advise all couples to get in touch once a date has been set as the diary can get booked up quickly (as much as two years in advance). Once confirmed, I advise that the main planning meeting takes place around four months before your wedding. Please note, I am currently taking bookings for 2024 and 2025.
